The economizer plays a crucial role in enhancing overall boiler thermal efficiency by recovering low-level energy from flue gas before it's exhausted to the atmosphere. This energy recovery occurs through heating the boiler feedwater. Economizers are tubular heat transfer surfaces that preheat boiler feed water before it enters the steam drum or furnace surfaces, significantly reducing operating costs by recovering extra energy from flue gas.
Economizers minimize thermal shock risks and water temperature fluctuations as feed water enters the drum or waterwalls. They also accommodate increasingly stringent environmental regulations limiting nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide emissions. The design compensates for the lower gas-side heat transfer coefficient compared to water-side through finned outer tube surfaces that increase heat transfer area. The primary design objective is achieving necessary heat transfer at minimal cost, with flue gas velocity being a key criterion - higher velocities improve heat transfer and reduce capital costs.
